A regulatory body is like a professional organisation but it is not a membership organisation and its primary activity is to protect the public.  Unlike professional bodies, a regulatory body is usually established on the basis of legal mandate.  Regulatory bodies exercise a regulatory function, that is: imposing requirements, restrictions and conditions, setting standards in relation to any activity, and securing compliance, or enforcement.  They cover a wide variety of professions, for example the Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Accreditation (MACTE) registers training centres world-wide to offer Montessori teaching qualifications.  Its purpose is to protect children and their parents by ensuring proper standards in the practice of Montessori teachers’ education.  It is itself regulated by the U.S. Dept. of Education.

There is an over-arching presumption that MAEL will co-operate fully with all regulatory bodies (including Ofqual) by which it is approved. Any issue which might lead to a breach of its conditions of recognition will be reported immediately, with an action plan of intended remedy.  MAEL is not yet approved as an awarding body by Ofqual, but this presumption will apply to their conditions as soon as approval is given.  MAEL will provide all required information in a timely fashion.

Where an MAEL qualification is regulated by either a governmental (or quasi-governmental) body or an accrediting agency (all referred to henceforth as ‘regulators’), all MAEL staff are expected to co-operate with the regulator in the following respects:
 keeping themselves up to date with those parts of the regulators’ provisions which have reference to their field of responsibility,
 providing reports at specified intervals where required,
 providing any assistance required by the regulator to facilitate their monitoring procedures and/or investigations.
If, at any point, there appears to be a conflict between the requirements of a regulator and MAEL’s policies, or any problem with meeting a regulator’s criteria, this must be referred immediately to the MD for urgent action.
Each regulatory body with which MAEL is associated or accredited by will have a named person as the main point of contact. The ‘registered person’ will be sufficiently senior to be able to provide authoritative information on all matters relating to compliance. The registered person is responsible for keeping regulators updated if any issue arises and also by completing an annual report in the prescribed format. Also, they will take responsibility for dealing with any requests from the regulator.
